Plein air comes from the French en plein air, meaning in the open. Use of the phrase with regard to fine arts began in the 19th century, and was used to describe paintings—particularly impressionist works—that concerned the study of atmospheric effects outdoors. Murai’s work in the Plein Air realm features richly layered oils that evoke the lush natural beauty, culture, and daily life beneath the skies of his beautiful Hawaii.
